I've just put out the most significant update to phpFlickr ever. It may very well break your current app. I knew that just switching to the serialized php might introduce some differences, so I went ahead and cleaned up some mistakes I made back when I put out version 1.0. Be sure to thoroughly test any apps if you are replacing an old version of phpFlickr with this one. You can expect phpFlickr 2.x to be almost completely backwards compatible with everything that version 2.0.0 does.
Let me outline the major changes:

Support for Flickr's new serialized PHP format. This means no more mucking about with slow error-ridden XML parsers to get the results. This also means that until 23 does the same thing, I'm suspending support for their API. Download the latest 1.x version of phpFlickr to use 23.

Better faster caching. For high performance sites, I was doing some things that were pretty dumb when it came to database caching. Now there is a class property that defines the maximum number of cached results it will allow before it runs the cleanup. This way, it'll only trigger cleanup every once in a while. The default is 1000, change this if you need it larger or smaller than this (1000 should be more than enough for most personal sites).

Better error handling. In this new version, the $die_on_error is set to false by default. Every method will return a boolean false value if the API returns an error and you can access the error code and message using the getErrorCode() and getErrorMsg() methods. In methods that alter data (e.g. photos_delete) will return a boolean true if there is no error state. Of course, you can always turn the die_on_error flag if you want.

Get it while it's hot!

The good news is that it should run a lot faster and better. It'll mean that there shouldn't be any differences between running this on PHP4 and PHP5 and international characters will all be supported correctly. I'll post an update when I manage to release it.

I decided to push out two quick changes.

phpFlickr is now officially licensed under the Lesser GPL. This means that you can now distribute it with your own projects, even if they aren't licensed under the GPL. I know that there are people who haven't been including phpFlickr with their projects for this very reason. I hope this makes things easier for everyone.

Since Flickr hasn't implemented an API to grant access to the friendly geodata (i.e. saying that a photo is "in New York, NY" or "near Metropolis, IL"), I've decided to do it for you out of the kindness of my heart. To use it in phpFlickr just call the member function "getFriendlyGeodata()" and pass the latitude and longitude as arguments. It'll return an array with the closest town/city/village/hamlet. This only works for towns in the USA right now because I got all of the data from the publicly available census data. Here's a quick example:

$f->getFriendlyGeodata($lat, $lon);

You can easily pass the location data you get from any of Flickr's API calls directly into this function. If you want to use this service in other applications or read up on the caveats I've placed on the service, you can read all about my Friendly Geodata service

I just put up the file released for 1.6. You'll notice that I've got all of the new methods in there, including the comment and geocoding API methods.

Just a couple of notes:

The photos_getWithGeoData() and photos_getWithoutGeoData() functions use the same style of arguments as photos_search(). That is to say that you need to pass an associative array if you want to use any of the optional arguments.

By default, phpFlickr will use PHP's XML parsing functions. This is different from the 1.6-beta release, but the same as every version before it. If you would like to use the SAXY parser which handles unusual characters better, but can use a lot more memory. Just bear that in mind if you are going to use it. To use the SAXY parser, use the following code (with whatever modifications you need, of course):
$f = new phpFlickr('[api key]');
$f->useSAXY(true);
